About L5 herniated disc
l5 herniated disc is the most problem that people face when suffering from disc herniations. Disc herniations happen at the lower lumbar spine, especially at the L4-5 and L5-S1 levels. Approximately 90% of disc herniations will occur at L4- L5 (lumbar segments 4 and 5) or L5- S1 (lumbar segment 5 and sacral segment1), which therefore causes pain in the L5 nerve or S1 nerve, respectively.
Disc herniation, ruptured or bulging discs occurs when the intervertebral disc lose water and become dried out. The disc compresses as a result of this and therefore lead to the deterioration of the tough outer ring allowing the nucleus, or the inside of the ring, to bulge out This is what is called a bulging disc.
When there is continued stress on the spine or when the disc continues to degenerate, the inner nucleus pulposus may actually rupture out from the annulus. This is considered a herniated or ruptured disc. The fragments of disc material from the ruptured disk can then press on the nerve roots that are located just behind the disc space. This can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or changes in sensation.
Symptoms of l5 herniated disc
L5 nerve impingement from a ruptured disc can cause weakness in extension of the big toe and potentially in the ankle (foot drop). The presence of radiculopathy ,pain and other symptoms depends on the site and degree of herniation. Pain and numbness can be felt on top of the foot as a result of this l5 disc degeneration , and the pain may also radiate into the rear.
As for the S1 nerve impingement from a ruptured disc may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (e.g. patients cannot do toe rises). The onset of symptoms is characterized by a burning, stabbing and sharp pain radiating down the posterior or lateral aspect of the leg, to below the knee. Numbness and pain can radiate down to the sole or outside of the foot.
Understanding l5 herniated disc pain
When the ruptured disc compresses the passing nerve root, it causes electric shooting pains down the leg. The herniated disc can also cause numbness and weakness in the leg. L5 s1 disc herniation occurs when the S1 compresses the nerve root. Pain will travel to the posterior thigh, buttocks and posterior lower leg and down to the heel. Numbness normally occurs at the calf area as well. Weakness can develop in the calf muscles and will cause difficulty in walking on the toes (problems with plantar flexion). L4-L5 disc herniation usually compresses the L5 nerve root. Pain normally goes to the buttocks, posterior thigh, posterolateral lower leg and the top of the foot.
l5 herniated disc treatment
Recommended treatment for ruptured discs is generally open back surgery such as disectomy ( removal of a portion of the intervertebral disc), with high risks, hospital stays and lengthy recuperation time.
With the lumbar (low back) Micadescectony you can get immediate relief. But it is very important not to delay on seeing the doc . The longer you put it off, you could be damaging that nerve.
